     Silver Spring

    Silver Spring, Maryland, named for a local spring that once sparkled with flakes of mica, is a sprawling suburb on the edge of Northwest D.C., covering nearly eight square miles. A plantation was the first settlement there in the 1850s, but by the late 1880s and early 1900s, a thriving town was developing around the neighborhood’s railroad and streetcar stops. Following World War II, the community developed a downtown shopping area and became an attractive place to live for workers who commuted to Washington. The opening of a Metro station in 1978 helped revitalize Silver Spring, and in recent years, Downtown has morphed into a multi-ethnic destination for dining and entertainment. Silver Spring’s housing includes a diverse array of styles, from brick colonials and Cape Cod houses to frame bungalows and loft condominiums.
