Mount Vernon

Mount Vernon, a community in Fairfax County, Virginia, is best known as the location of George Washington’s country estate. Today, it’s a thriving Washington suburb whose amenities include a country club with an 18-hole championship course. To the east of Mount Vernon, the nearby Fort Hunt area in Alexandria is named after a 19th-Century military installation — now a park — that was built on land that once belonged to the nation’s first President as well. Fort Hunt once served as a field hospital for the Bonus Marchers, a group of World War I veterans and their families who came to Washington toward the end of the Great Depression to demand back pay for their service. During World War II, it also serviced as a military intelligence center where prisoners of war were interrogated. Today, the Fort Hunt community prides itself on being a close-knit, family-oriented neighborhood that retains its 1950s small-town charm and assortment of small businesses. It’s filled with refurbished split-level single family homes. Mount Vernon similarly has a variety of spacious single and multi-story residences.
