    Navy Yard

Washington’s Navy Yard neighborhood, which dates back to 1799, was the place where the famous ironclad Monitor came to be repaired after a Civil War battle with the Confederate navy, and in the late 1880s it became the Navy’s center for manufacturing guns and shells, as well as the place where the giant gears for the Panama Canal’s locks were fabricated. Weapons production stopped in the early 1960s, though the Navy still has administrative offices and a museum there. Today, Navy Yard is the site of Nationals Park and it’s become known as a recreation-oriented neighborhood with kayak and paddleboard rentals and even a trapeze school, as well as trendy dining spots. The housing stock includes condos and townhomes built since the 1990s.
