    Shaw

The historic Shaw neighborhood in Northwest DC is named after Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, who commanded an all-Black regiment during the Civil War. Some of the neighborhood’s earliest residents were formerly enslaved people who came north, and in the 20th century, Shaw became famous as a center for Black music and culture. Its renown was thanks in large part to the historic Howard Theatre, which hosted performers such as Duke Ellington and Count Basie and later became a showcase for rhythm and blues in the 1950s and soul superstars such as Marvin Gaye and James Brown in the 1960s. The area suffered severe damage during the 1968 riots that caused many residents to leave, but began a revival in the 1980s. Today, the Shaw neighborhood, whose architecture includes Italianate, Second Empire, and Queen Anne row houses, is one of the District’s hottest real estate markets.
