Fort Washington, named after the first president, was built in 1808-09 to protect the nation’s capital. After outnumbered and out gunned defenders were forced to retreat from the British and blow up the fort during the War of 1812, the fortifications were rebuilt. Today it’s a National Park Service site, where staff and volunteer reenactors still give once-a-month demonstrations between May and October in which they fire an actual cannon. The surrounding community of Fort Washington has become a destination for those who want to live in a family-oriented area with moderately priced homes on big lots, plenty of green space and access to a marina for recreational boaters — while still being conveniently close for commuters who drive into Washington or take Amtrak trains from stations in Alexandria or Lorton. The housing stock includes 1950s brick ramblers on huge lots and larger multi-story brick and frame homes built in the 1970s.
