    Logan Circle

During the Civil War, what is now Logan Circle was the site of a camp for escaped slaves. By the 1870s, however, it had been transformed into a fashionable neighborhood known as Iowa Circle for the wealthy and influential, including Sen. John Logan of Illinois, a former Civil War general, for whom it was renamed in 1930. It also became a magnet for prominent Black residents, ranging from the painter Alma Thomas to flamboyant evangelist Charles “Sweet Daddy” Grace. In the decades that followed, the area fell into a slow decline, culminated by the 1968 riots, but has risen over the past several decades to become a sought-after location, due to its elegant Victorian houses, its assortment of restaurants and a community park that’s become a gathering place for residents.
