    Mount Rainier

The present location of Mount Rainier once was the farm of Thomas Clemson, a diplomat whose family founded Clemson University. After the Civil War, Clemson returned to South Carolina, and his property was acquired by real estate developers. According to local lore, one of the surveyors who drew up the subdivision was from the Pacific Northwest, and named the area after the mountain in Washington state. After a streetcar line connecting Mount Rainier with downtown DC was completed in 1897, Mount Rainer evolved into a Washington suburb, and grew rapidly in the 1940s and 1950s before falling into decline for several decades. Starting in the 1980s the community began a resurgence. Mount Rainier’s residential architectural style varies from block to block, from late-Victorian and Colonial Revival homes and Craftsman bungalows in the older sections, to Cape Cod and suburban ranch houses in the parts built during and after World War II.
