    Sandy Spring and nearby Olney both started out in the 1700s as rural villages in north central Montgomery County, Maryland. Sandy Spring originally was settled by members of the Religious Society of Friends, also known as Quakers, who were looking for a haven where they could grow corn and tobacco. According to local legend, the settlement’s size was dictated by how far its early residents could ride on horseback and still make it home by dark. In the 1800s the community, which had outlawed slavery, became a stop on the famous Underground Railroad for escaped slaves. Olney also started out as a rural crossroads, but gradually grew into a small town with a commercial core. Today, they form a thriving suburban expanse. Olney has more modestly priced detached single-family homes, townhouses and condos, while Sandy Spring draws homebuyers who are looking for bigger houses and more land. In addition to standard suburban ranch homes and Colonials, it has a growing number of recently-built McMansions.
